Richard
Stephens When you take a Richard Stephens workshop you will be exposed to three main things. Informative technical information sprinkled with humor and antidotes, entertaining and educational painting demonstrations and lots of one on one time with Richard as he helps you through your individual painting process. Richard has a true passion for watercolor and enjoys the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with students of all levels.
Doris
Rice Experience the historic downtown, views of the Ouachita Mountains and Lakes Catherine and Hamilton, simply beautiful scenery! Doris will guide you through the process of setting up for outdoor work. Simplify your materials to carry onto location. You will receive guidance for creating a painting in the midst of “so much to see all around”. This is a process of finding your personal choice of subject and fitting the principals of design and painting together to create a work of art.
Donna
Dunnahoe Wrapping fiber around a core that coils around and around until a container is formed is the world’s oldest form of basketry. The student will learn various wrapping techniques and will complete a simple basket. Instruction on how to weave in beads and other ornamentations will be covered. Material fee of $30 provides the students with instruction booklet, beads, reed, needle and weaving materials. Cathy
Taylor Start with some watercolor and acrylic, add a touch of collage and a pinch of print making and you have the perfect recipe for a mixed media masterpiece! Join Cathy Taylor, award winning mixed media artist and member of the National Collage Society and International Society of Experimental Artists, for an exploration into the limitless world of mixed media. Mixed Media and Collage Adventure offers enormous opportunity for creative expression...easy and non-intimidating for the beginner and expansive and challenging for the advanced artist. Topics include found paper collage, collage with mixed media, photo and image transfer techniques, innovative techniques with watercolors and acrylics and monoprinting, along with other exciting adventures.. *A special segment will be presented on Cathy’s award winning Anthology Series which was featured in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.
Don
Andrews, AWS Don’s Color Emphasis Landscape class isn’t geared to any specific level of achievement, rather artists at all levels will benefit from a 5 day exploration into color, design, organization, light and their utilization in the exciting world of landscape painting. This workshop will be packed with demonstrations, discussions, individual help, personal and group critiques.
Betty
Carr This workshop covers linear as well as atmospheric perspective, drawing basics and aspects of painting light. How to examine colors, values and temperatures of light and shadow, its luminosity, is demonstrated. Regardless of style, sound design and compositional aspects in using light is discovered in order to direct the eye. You will examine the “how to’s” of massing and organizing darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, direction and other important design applications in creating dynamic paintings. Carr also demonstrates how to work from field sketches, value studies and a combination of photos. You are encouraged to bring in paintings and drawings for critique for open discussion, and your favorite photos, especially ones saved for that “challenging” painting. Come prepared to have fun! Betty is the author of a number of books, the latest being Seeing the Light: An Artist’s Guide. Visit Betty’s web site for more information
Robert
Burridge WAIT LIST Burridge's popular "Loosen Up" workshops nurture individual success and personal enrichment with a big emphasis on daily painting projects at your own pace. It is stress-free, but be warned; you could end up with too much enthusiasm for painting. Burridge's flagship workshop offers a variety of painting subjects for everyone. A highly energized painting workshop emphasizing loose and creative experimentation. Designed for the professional painter who is stuck in a style as well as for the novice who wants to conquer their fear of painting. Starting with small 6"x9" multiple "warm-up painting exercises" up to larger-format paintings, Burridge's positive approach towards the act of painting will inspire you to loosen up, have fun again and paint more! Expect an intense, concentrated and lively workshop where you will create many works of art using spontaneity for maximum effect.
Katharine Cartwright All great paintings begin with a great concept! This 5-day workshop is designed to help student painters at all ability levels learn how to create meaningful and unique art. Learn how to escape the ordinary by painting the extraordinary! Learn how to escape imitation by being original! Kathy works closely with each student in a process that begins with concept development and the construction of a working thesis. She then demonstrates how to use a thesis to create a series of paintings that is uniquely meaningful, technically consistent and masterful. Students may work in any medium. Daily instruction is followed by student engagement in this think – write – paint – share workshop. Kathy teaches with warmth, humor, enthusiasm, and insight. As an experienced teacher and award-winning artist, she is able to help students develop and improve technical skills in painting as well as concept development. This workshop provides painters in all mediums with the necessary tools required to create great art! Instructor Biography: Kathy is an inducted member of the National Association of Women Artists, and a Signature Member of the North East Watercolor Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society. She received formal academic training in fine art at The Maryland Institute of Art, The College of Charleston, and Kutztown University. She has over thirty years of teaching experience, has won dozens of awards, and her work is included in nearly one hundred private and corporate collections. Kathy is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who of American Women.
Janet
Rogers, AWS Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of this dynamic workshop – progressing to the portrait/figure. Through a series of “fun” painting exercises, students will develop a more loose and natural approach – giving them an opportunity to be more spontaneous and expressive in their paintings. A few drawing exercises will be included for the portrait. Many “features” will be covered!! - including children’s portraits. Some students may want to paint just portraits or just flowers, although the demonstrations and instruction are geared to beginning with flowers and ending with the portrait/figure. Janet will demonstrate her intuitive approach throughout the workshop and work individually with each student, as well as class instruction. “Show and Tell” sessions will be included so that students can see their progression as well as their fellow students. This is always an invaluable tool. Some of the goals for the workshop will be to discover new color and design, applying transparent flesh tones, finding the “life” in paintings, and for students to experience their own unique “connections” in watercolor. Janet has won numerous awards from exhibiting her watercolors, including Disney’s Festival of the Masters, “Under the Oaks”, and the Florida Watercolor Society, of which she is a Signature Member, and also a Member with Excellence of the South Carolina Watercolor Society.
Owen
and Kyoko Hunt Have an unforgettable artistic experience at Owen and Kyoko Hunt’s Watercolor Workshop. We’ll cover all aspects of watercolor painting, starting with experiencing free but controlled Sumi-e type brush strokes. Also, we’ll learn about drawing concepts, proper amount of water and pigment, values and color mixing for a variety of genres. Then we’ll move into experiencing how to get in touch with what you feel about a subject and how to express it on paper. Owen and Kyoko both will be on hand to give personal help to each artist. Demonstrations, large and small, will be performed throughout the workshop. Whether you are a beginner or a painter with years of experience, let’s take a journey together to enjoy many painting adventures.
Donna
Dunnahoe This class will give the artist an overview of weaving and provide them new ways to create texture for mix media art. The student will weave samples on various types of looms from basic to complex. Weaving terminology will be taught as well as how to build simple looms. The material fee of $30 includes instruction book and fiber. Looms will be provided for use during the workshop.
Cathy
Taylor A fun, extremely productive workshop for beginners and advanced students as well, monoprinting will focus on methods and techniques for producing high quality artwork, even if you can’t draw! A monoprint is a single image created by transferring an image designed on a plexiglass plate to paper. Monoprinting allows the artist to create marvelous textures and surface effects that cannot be obtained by using a brush. The workshop will begin with a really entertaining demo followed by lots of time to experiment. Use monoprinting to create beautiful note cards, frame able prints, images for use in altered books, other projects and more .Even if you can’t draw a straight line, you can produce beautiful fine art prints, EVEN PORTRAITS!!! This workshop will also include projects in Nature Printing! A large body of work will be produced in a short period of time with high levels of success even for rank beginners.
Hugh
Dunnahoe This workshop is for anyone willing to learn, regardless of experience. For artists who are new to oils, layering is a great way to learn the medium and achieve successful results. For painters who struggle with mixing colors instead of mud, or are still not sure what to do next, the layering approach can be liberating. For experienced painters looking to expand their vocabulary, the unique effects that can be achieved by using layers may be just the thing. The techniques that will be taught are easy to understand and will become useful tools in any artist's studio.
Jean
Grastorf, AWS, NWS, TWSA “Pouring Light"- For those who love transparent watercolor and its washes of color and light, the workshop will offer a unique freedom. Masking to preserve the white paper and pouring veils of blending pigments often lead to unusual interpretations. The relationship of the abstract design underlying the representational subject matter is stressed along with the importance of a strong value pattern. There are daily demonstrations covering the painting process from concept to completion. Attention is paid to simplifying and focusing on the important elements of the painting as we experiment with the alternative ways of putting pigment on paper. Individual attention and critiques will be part of the curriculum as well as the enjoyment of watching the flow of glorious washes. Letting go and allowing the paint to "do its thing" is great fun! Creative chaos and control for those ready to try a new approach to a traditional technique. Jean Grastorf, AWS, NWS, TWSA is a graduate of The Rochester Institute of Technology with further studies at the School of Ceramics at Alfred, NY. She is an elected member of numerous watercolor societies. She has served on the Board of Directors of the American Watercolor Society as well as the Jury of Submissions and Jury of Awards. Her work appears in watercolor books and magazines and she is the author of "Pouring Light, Layering Transparent Watercolor" which was released in November 2005
Marlene Gremillion Students will learn such things as: choosing a photo to paint a portrait from, mixing colors for portraits, study composition, focal point, and contrast . This is not a drawing class. Students will work from enlarged photos or project the photo to paint from. My main objective is for students to come out with a better understanding of the medium of watercolor in portrait use. Painting wonderful paintings is not my major goal. I want them to go home and utilize the knowledge learned to keep painting on their own.
Laurie
Humble, NSA Join Laurie, Author of the best-selling book Watercolor Depth & Realism, as she teaches her secrets to creating greater depth in your paintings though a series of carefully designed exercises. You will learn how increasing depth can strengthen your composition and focal point. Both beginners and advanced painters will learn techniques, which can be applied to any painting style, and any subject matter. You will be asked to bring any watercolor painting you feel is too “flat” to the final day of the workshop, where you will have the opportunity to rework it using your newly acquired skills. Laurie’s stress-free teaching style provides a fun and relaxed atmosphere with lots of individual attention! Laurie Humble is the author of Watercolor Depth and Realism. Her watercolors have appeared in more than Fifty National and International Exhibitions garnering numerous awards. She holds signature memberships in seven watercolor societies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Texas State University. Her work was the subject of a feature article, in American Artist Magazine, and has appeared in Southwest Art, and International Artist. Laurie’s work appeared on the cover of the October 2008 issue of Watercolor Artist, accompanied by a feature article. Her work is included in the new book, Splash 10, a North Light publication, as well as the F & W media 2009 calendar.
